How to prevent and control diabetes—Its not what you think

Diabetes is a persistent health condition that impacts millions of individuals globally. It arises due to excessive sugar levels in the bloodstream. It's important to know that the probability of getting diabetes depends on genetic factors

In talking about diabetes, we should also learn something about insulin, insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, and when not functioning properly,  blood sugar levels can become dangerously high which leads to diabetes

It's important to also note that diabetes comes in different variations, here are some types in which it occurs

  1. Prediabetes: here the blood sugar is high but not enough to be Type 2 diabetes.

  2. Type 1 diabetes: this is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.

  3. Type 2 diabetes: a more chronic condition whereby the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Some common causes of Diabetes are,

- Genetic factors and genetic predisposition play a role, but the exact triggers remain unclear.

- Obesity, being overweight or obese significantly raises the risk.

- Physical inactivity, as lack of physical activity contributes to insulin resistance.

- Family history

- Risk factors for getting diabetes increase with age.

Always consult the doctor for medical personalized advice and treatment.

And finally, let's talk about prevention

Maintaining a healthy weight: If you're overweight or obese, losing weight can help lower your risk. You can try setting small, realistic goals, like walking for 10 minutes a day.

Eating a healthy diet: Focus on eating less and making healthy food choices. You can try adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals and reducing sugar, salt, white grains, foods that are high in saturated fat, and processed foods. Instead, you can try eating diets rich in whole grains, legumes, and nuts, and moderate in alcohol consumption. Fiber-rich foods can also help you eat less because they're more filling and energy-rich.

Staying physically active: Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day.

Try getting more sleep, look to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

Avoid smoking, smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches your organs and can cause high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol, heart attacks, and strokes.
